Friends of the fine arts
The Gesellschaft der Freunde bildender Kunst (Association of the Friends of the Fine Arts) has used its membership dues to acquire works of contemporary art for more than seventy years, and makes these available to the Kunstmuseum St. Gallen as permanent loans. A sophisticated collection has developed over the years, which shapes and enriches the museum collection.
Private sponsorship of public art collections is the order of the day rather than a paradox. Private patronage is necessary because public means for art acquisitions are gradually running dry due to a general pressure to save; an art museum atrophies without a dynamic, steadily renewing collection; and an attractive museum serves all and is used by all. As an association of these patrons, the Gesellschaft der Freunde bildender Kunst is able to provide assurance of a reliable and continual sponsorship through its broad based support.
Collection policy
In agreement with the director and curator, we acquire key works by younger artists who occupy an independent position in contemporary art with their work, and who have shown outstanding performance. The acquisition of works by established artists is the exception and serves to fill in gaps in the collection. Our acquisitions supplement and expand the collection of the Kunstmuseum St. Gallen. Membership is as follows:
